The Names of God

God has many different names. Names used to be very important in Biblical days because the name of a person spoke of who you are and foretold your destiny. The various names of God signify His attributes. They speak of His power, which is unlimited.

He is Alpha and Omega; the beginning and the end. John said, "In the beginning was the Word and the Word was with God and the Word is God." (John 1:1) This means that God is, always was, and always will be. God has no beginning or end. He is both eternal and everlasting.

Whenever a baby was born, it was not named immediately because the parents gave careful thought to what the child's name would be. They knew that whatever they named the child, that was what he/she would become. When God changed the names of Abram and Sarai, He was changing their destiny. God changed both Abram and Sarai's names, when He called them to be His own. Abram, which means "Exalted Father" was changed by God to Abraham, which means "Father of a great multitude." God changed Sarai's name (quarrelsome) to Sarah, which means "Princess".

Naming denotes ownership or to take possession of. God named man Adam, but Adam named his wife Eve. Adam and Eve had several children. The first child they named Cain, which means "acquire". The second son, they named Abel, which means, "keeper". When Cain murdered his borther, the Lord aksed him where is your brother. Cain's response was "Am I my brother's keeper?" Adam also had another son named Seth, which means "appointed". Another son, he named Noah, which means "rest."

The names of God are very important. All Believers need to know the different names of God as we interact with Him. There are at least 21 names of God that speak to His many attributes. They are:

I recently learned another name for God. It is one of favorite. Whenever I am going through a fierce battle,I call on "El Gibbor" for help. This name means "God, the Mighty Warrior, Mighty One." I know that every time I call on El Gibbor, He will fight for me and I will come forth in victory. "The Lord is a man of war, the Lord is His name." (Exodus 15:3)
